Facebook Banned Donald Trump Account | Donald Trump & US Capitol Incident | Explained by- Prateek Gupta

Introduction

Greetings, friends! Imagine a new Prime Minister is being elected at the Indian Parliament.  At the same time, a crowd gathers outside the Parliament armed with weapons.  The crowd is raging in anger and gets in the Parliament climbing over walls and bypassing security.  It starts vandalizing after getting in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha and riots happen right in the heart of Parliament. How would you feel?  Something similar happened in the world’s oldest democracy, the USA. This is the incident of 6th January, 2021 when a ceremonial Congress session was underway. By the way, the USA's Parliament is known as Congress, if you do not know where the electors were voting for their new President.  A lot of people were injured...some even lost their lives. After this incident, Donald trump’s Twitter, Facebook and Instagram is banned.  Why did this happen? Why is Donald Trump being blamed here and why this one incident has shaken the democracies all around the world? Let’s get to know about it in today’s blog.

Us Congress Session

In this blog, I explained the process of electing the President in USA and what is the system of electors? Technically they elect the 538 electors and then these electors elect one President. So, electors are sort of middlemen.  But the post of these electors is ceremonial.  In reality, they vote for the same President who has been chosen by the public.  So, the timeline looks something like this.  The election happens on 3rd November when the public goes out and votes for the new President.  The result generally comes out in a day itself about who has won and will become the new President... But the US elections of this time stretched up to December for ballot counting to be finished in every state.  Many disputes also came up regarding ballot counting so these cases went to the court and the court solved it.  It took time up till December for the numbers to get final that who has won and by how many numbers Joe Biden won as you all know.  These electors cast their vote for the winner of each state on December 14th.   System is such that these votes were to be counted on 6th January in a ceremonial session in Congress.  After this, the new President will have his swearing-in ceremony on 20th January.  That is, Joe Biden will officially become the President from 20th January.  6th January was quite an important date prior to the President’s swearing-in ceremony.  And on this very day, Trump supporters crash the parliament and cause riots.

Why It Happened?

The reason behind this is that since 4-5th November, since the election results have been finalized,  Donald Trump kept writing again and again on his Twitter and social media handles that how these election results are fraud... ...in reality, he himself has won the election. Joe Biden’s win is a false win.  Media is showing him to be the winner but in reality that is not so.  Donald Trump has propagated this conspiracy theory through his handles again and again.  But in reality this is a straight lie. Till now, no proof has been found that this election results are fraud or any fraud has been carried out in the election.  Other than Trump and his supporters, everyone is clear that Joe Biden is the new President and he is the one having majority votes. You know what they say, “Repeat a lie often enough and it becomes the truth”.  Something similar happened with Donald Trump.  He kept on repeating the same lie again and again such that his supporters also believed him.  Some days back, Trump said to his supporters that you will have to fight to reject these fake results.  Trump told his supporters that you should march towards the Capitol, that is,  he provoked the people to come forward on the counting day to come outside of the Parliament/Congress to protest.  "You can never take back your country with weakness. You have to be strong. You have to show your strength." This kind of language was used by Trump for his supporters.  Due to this very reason, most of the public and experts believe that Trump basically provoked his supporters which resulted in them being violent.  He stressed again and again on the thing that their anger needs to be expressed, that they have to show their strength if they want to fight and reject the fake results.  And for this reason itself, a crowd gathered outside the Capitol building.

Reaction Of Police

They jumped over walls, breached security, got in the Parliament with weapons and started vandalizing. In many videos, it can be seen that Police and security rather than stopping this mob, just stood there and watched the show and let the destruction take place This is the reason that many people have compared the American Police with Delhi Police as well. Remember what happened at the time of JNU. The attackers entered JNU and were causing destruction while the police stood by and watched the show.  Something similar was seen outside the US Congress as well. After this, their House and Senate were put under lockdown which is their equivalent of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. And whichever politicians were present, they were taken away to safety.  What is interesting to note is that this mob was waving the US flag. The mobs stood there holding the American flag.  They considered themselves to be nationalists and patriots. The police officers who were not listening to them were being called "traitors" and "anti-national" by the mob.  By the time the situation came under control, four people had already been killed and more than 50 were arrested for this violence.  During this entire incident, Donald Trump was praising his supporters on Twitter.  He said how he loves his supporters and is requesting them to retreat peacefully.

Hypocrisy of Facebook

Openly supporting this riotous mob was the reason that Donald Trump’s Twitter, Facebook and Instagram account was banned. Mark Zuckerberg even wrote a detailed post on how he doesn’t want Donald Trump to write anything that incites violence in the country anymore.  This is the reason for his account being banned. Here, a big hypocrisy of Facebook can be seen  because when it comes to banning the account of Indian rioters then Facebook backs off due to the fear of attack on their employees. It has actually been reported that Facebook knows which people in India incite the rioters,  spread hatred in the name of religion but it does not ban their account because they fear their employees might start getting attacked. I will attach the link of this report in the description box below if you want to read this report in full. A lot of people have exposed the hypocrisy of the US Police on social media that shows when the protest is against Donald Trump,  the Police stands ready while when it is in favour of Donald Trump, and the one that is getting violent... ...it can be seen that the mob is causing a riot, the Police takes so much time to take action and how indirectly it lets the mob do this.

Reaction Of Congress

This incident has shaken the democracies of the entire world.  Almost every major leader of every country has condemned this and has said that what has happened is very wrong.  Probably because it compels the people living in the democratic countries around the world to ask a question.  When it can happen in the world’s oldest democracy then is our democracy really stable? In my opinion, this incident shows that in today’s world, how one lie,  one conspiracy theory which is spread so much even if all fact checkers debunk it  but one emotionally manipulative lie is enough to provoke the public and cause riots.  Consider our very own nation, one Whatsapp rumour spread in a village is enough to result in a mob lynching.  So in my opinion, what happened in the USA can be considered a sophisticated version of that only.  This incident also shows us how one joker politician is enough to destroy the democratic institution of the entire country. This is a lesson for the rest of democratic countries of the world that how we cannot take democracy for granted. I hope that you found this video to be informative.
